Kobe Bryant the Jerk

Kobe Bryant once again has proven that he is a jerk. Kobe throws a nasty elbow so that he can prove a point. It is unfortanate for the NBA and the world that players can not be more like Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs. No, if they are like Duncan, they don’t get the audience, so people like Kobe can continue their terrible teamwork, and their assaults. Tim Duncan, Bruce Bowen don’t get ratings, so the worse you are, the better. Of course you take it too far and you get the boot i.e. Ron Artest. Kobe Bryant Lakers elbow Suspension
Kobe gets suspended for 2 games, which will cost him about 300 thousand, a slap on the wrist compared to what Ron Artest would have received. Kobe assaults someone, and once again shows why the NBA is the National Brawlers Association.
The NBA needs teamwork, that is what will gather crowds. It also wins games. Look at the Detroit Pistons, who are winning because they have 5 team players. Look at the San Antonio Spurs, teamwork at its best. They are champions. But, the media likes bad boys because they gather crowds. Why nor promote good teamwork, and then our kids can grow up with real heros, and not criminals.

Is Donovan McNabb black enough for the ‘hood’?

Donovan McNabb has taken the career roller coaster ride of being booed when he was drafted in 1999, criticized as a product of the white media wanting to build him up because he’s black, losing 3 conference championship games in a row, finally going to the Super Bowl, starting the season with your star receiver criticizing you constantly to the press, throwing for 300 yards three times in four games, getting a painful debilitating sports hernia, star receiver suspended and out for the season, and last, but not least, J. Whyatt “Jerry” Mondesire, head of the Philadephia chapter of the NAACP and publisher of the black oriented Philadelphia Sun newspaper, decides to rip into McNabb.for trying to change his style of play. What has Donovan McNabb done to deserve such cutting criticism from all ends of the sports world black and white?

The story originated in the Philadelphia Sun on 4 Dec 2005, but has been reprinted by several sources since then. I took the story and further comments from the Attytood, a Philadelphia internet news site, http://www.pnionline.com/dnblog/attytood/archives/002540.html . Jerry Mondesire rips into McNabb for playing the race card in his style of play. What he’s inferring is that McNabb is trying to get away from the black quarterback stereotype of running a lot, rather than being considered a passer. McNabb wants to be a pocket passer because that gives credibility as a ‘real’ quarterback as opposed to just being athletic and having a gun for an arm. Mondesire is upset with the perceived theory that quarterbacks that are good runners can’t be great passers. His premise is that McNabb is so concerned with fitting the mold of what a quarterback should be that he’s not realizing his full potential and turning his back on being black and what he does and other black quarterbacks do well and that’s scramble to get out of trouble.

Do Christian athletes have an impact on the world?

Do you ever wonder how sincere an athlete is when you see them all huddled up together praying after the game or when a player scores a touchdown and points to the sky? I certainly am and decided to research which athletes actually proclaim their Christian faith, love for God, and how their actions are visually noticed by others out in public and what influence they may have with those actions.

Any person can profess to being a Christian, but there’s truly only a certain breed of athlete that professes their faith for all to hear and not be ashamed of what the response will be or what anyone thinks. I’ll provide a breakdown of as many athletes that I can that profess to be Christians, but I want to highlight those athletes that are well-known for their Christian faith. You’ll see their deeds will generally match their actions and not just a sound byte for fans in an attempt to gain a measure of respect for being a good guy as compared to some other athletes that seem to stay in the media for their negative actions off of the playing fields.

There are several athletes that profess their Christianity and are known for openly living the life with God as their role models and inspirations. These guys never miss a chance to spread the word to anyone that will listen and how it has influenced their lives. The athletes I will profile are the late football great Reggie White, quarterback Kurt Warner, future hall of fame center David Robinson, and former L.A. Lakers forward A.C. Green. I chose to profile these athletes because their lives have generally been exemplary during and after their playing days and not just people that later on claimed to be reborn or just having just discovered God. Their influence is clear in that they have lived their life in a way that others know it’s an every day thing and not just for the benefit of the cameras.

BCS Gets it right on this year…Kinda

USC and Texas are going to finally play for the title on 4 January, so this goes to show that the BCS bowl system actually does work right. I guess you can say the system works based on what you expect in your college football season and bowl game season also. For myself, the system will never work until there’s a playoff system and I don’t care if it’s just 8 teams. At a minimum, I want to see the top 8 teams in the top four BCS bowl games.

For those fans that have been living under a rock for the last two days, the four BCS bowl games to be played will pit Georgia vs West Virginia in the Sugar Bowl, Notre Dame vs Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, Florida State vs Penn State in the Orange Bowl, and the game for all the marbles (1st place), the USC Trojans vs the Texas Longhorns in the Rose Bowl. All of these games seem fair enough on the surface, but each match-up except the USC-Texas game actually carries some baggage with it.

Georgia had a solid season, but lost 2 games. They would have never made it into one of the BCS games without upsetting LSU in the title game of the Southeastern Conference. West Virginia only lost 1 game, but they play in the obviously weakened Big East Conference. There’s debate going on as to whether they should lose their automatic BCS slot for their champion in the near future when a vote can be taken. If the Big East gets an automatic slot, why not other conferences. Last season, an obviously inferior Pittsburgh team played in the Fiesta Bowl with 4 losses and got blown out by a strong Utah team. This conference’s automatic slot has to be seriously looked at.

You have to go with Georgia in this game by 14
